Jodhpur is made for sunsets. The desert light turns the sandstone fort gold, the blue houses deepen to violet, and the lakes on the city's edge mirror the sky. After many evenings chasing the best light, these are our favourite spots and exactly when to be there.

Aim to arrive 30–45 minutes before sunset to settle in, and check the day's sunset time so you don't miss the best few minutes.

Mehrangarh Fort ramparts

The upper ramparts of Mehrangarh Fort give you the definitive Jodhpur sunset — the whole indigo old city glowing below as the sky turns. If you're inside for the late afternoon, find a west-facing terrace. The fort is about 4 km from the city centre.

Jaswant Thada

The white marble of Jaswant Thada glows beautifully in low sun, with the fort as a backdrop and the lake reflecting the colour. It's quieter than the fort and a lovely, gentle place to end the day.

Kaylana Lake & the rock park

For a classic lake sunset, Kaylana Lake (about 11 km) is the spot — open water, rocky hills and birds settling for the night. Neighbouring Machiya Safari Park has a dedicated sunset viewpoint. Closer in, the Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park offers golden light on the fort walls.

Old-city rooftops

Finally, the rooftop cafés around the Toorji stepwell and the blue lanes give you fort-and-rooftop sunsets with a cold drink in hand — the most relaxed option, and great for photos of the Blue City catching the last light.
